miniproject

Alright, gang, I'm trying to get this mini-project thing working, and I'm having trouble...I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...as usual.

I've uploaded my stuff here. I've looked at it in Firebug, and it's saying the function I've created isn't defined...well, I think it is...what am I missing here?

Anyhow, please help me figure this out...I'm not good at code, so it takes me forever to figure these things out.

Thanks.
Rosie

group name

In reference to Joern's Blog:

Could you please post your official "TeamTag" (that you use for your team project posts) and please trackback to this post. Then I will prepare this "Team Projects Posts Box" and Bud will put it onto Learning Remix Winter 2007.

Linda, Nikhil and my group's name is Hack-n-Mash.

Response to Mike's Response about my miniproject

In response to Mike's blog

the first "var request = null" there was no function called, it went right to the "try" line. The book uses createRequest as the function name. Then in the event handler function, that createRequest function is called to start the ball rolling.

That's how I had it originally, but if you notice in Chapter 2 (pages 86-94) it addresses this...putting the var request = null and the code from the createRequest() function is just there, before you do anything else. This allows the javascript that's not in a function to get run statically.

I think what's going on is something to do with the php...and I don't know very much about it. I tried to mimic the lookUpCustomer.php from the BreakNeck stuff, just renaming things and changing some of the code. I'm not really sure...I'm really at a loss at what to do, can anyone help me here?

Thanks for trying, Mike!

Miniproject update

Woo! I got it working. I want to thank Jayanthy for helping me. She helped me figure out what I was doing, and then I fixed some typos...always the problem when you're working with code, and I got it working. I almost danced, if you were in the lab, you saw! :)

Check out the finished product here!
Thanks Joy!

learning remix fixes and ideas, chapter 3 HRA

I'm just wondering if anyone has come up with any more fixes?

I really think the tag cloud needs limits...it has way too many tags on it.

I also would LOVE to be able to organize the blogs in the same fashion we can organize the tags.....It's after February 1st, right? :)

Joern..I really like your idea for the widget you're making for our projects...I think it might be a good idea to pass along your "code" for that to someone in the undergrad spot so they can do the same thing...since we are interacting with both 696 and 449. What's everyone else's take on this?

Has anyone played with Chapter 3 yet? Looks cool...but looks long...I got a little behind this week, so I'm going to use the weekend to catch up...hopefully!

Re: Cheap Laptop

This is in response to Milot's Blog:

These low cost computers have a crank build in them and one minute of cranking will power your laptop for 40 minutes!

This would be great for people that are on airplanes. I'm actually trying to figure out if I should buy a new battery for my laptop for my trip to China, or if I should buy one of these computers. It reminds me of the flash lights we have. You shake them for like a minute, and the shine nice and bright for about 5 minutes. This is great when you have no way to use a battery.

How cool!

Learning Remix Error

I'd like to point out that Firebug found this error on the Learning Remix site:

[Exception... "'Component does not have requested interface' when calling method: [nsIInterfaceRequestor::getInterface]" nsresult: "0x80004002 (NS_NOINTERFACE)" location: "" data: no]

Something to be addressed?

Review of MapYourBuddies

I am reviewing MapYourBuddies

Strengths:

I think the idea of MapYourBuddies is really cool. I've always wanted to have an idea of where friends are at, so it's really neat.

The Login is a nice feature.

I think it's cool that even I could log into my face book account and play with it. Overall, it's really cool

Weaknesses:

MapYourBuddies already mentioned weaknesses:

When the bubble pops up, you have to click the marker again to get the whole picture.

Everyone in one city has markers, but you can't tell because they're all on top of each other.

That's all I can figure out...

Review of ISAsiteMashup

This is my review of the ISASiteMashup (site of mashup) group

Strengths:

I think it's great that you can do this, and I also think it doesn't have to be just for the International Student Association. Freshman, or transfer students would also value from this.

They have gotten the search box up and running, and it's nice because it understands spaces, upper and lower case....and it's accurate!

This has major potential to even be put on the EMU main website...maybe someone should look into that?

Weaknesses

The gray background is a little boring.

Once you do a search the "Welcome to Eastern" bubble doesn't disappear.

Overall, nice job, ISASiteMashup (announcement)

Review of AJACS

This is my review of the AJACS site

Strengths:

This is an amazing site, and I'm absolutely jealous that Linda and I don't have another person to help us! If only, right?

This site has an amazing amount of potential. You can add all KINDS of stuff to this!

I think it's cool that the bubbles have tabs...how'd you do that?

The closing of the bubble option

The ability to click on a picture and it makes it bigger, but then you can go back and click on another one...just really cool.

The feedback option

Weakneses:

Are there any?

I guess I would only say if you close off the bubble after selecting a city, and you try to click on the marker, nothing happens.

AJACS (announcement) have done a wonderful job!

Review of Where Is My Caffeine?

This is my review of Where is My Caffeine:

Strengths:

This site is very well organized, and I think it does a nice job to show what we've done so far in the world of AJAX.

The colors of the site fit the theme of the website, it's really nice.

I like the graphic. It would be cool if you could make it interactive...ie, let people take sugars and place them in the cup...but I don't know how possible that would ever be.

I like that the pop up balloons are tabbed and has the hours of the shops. That's a nice feature.

Weaknesses:

I think the add to search box should be in the right column...so you have the nifty coffee tray, the map, then the "add to locations" box....

I think that if you could put in a "get directions" feature in the pop up balloon, that would be nice...maybe that will be for another iteration?

Overall, wonderful job, and I'm wondering, where is my caffeine, cuz I sure need it? :)

(here's the link for the announcement)

Review of My Favorite Places

This is my review of My Favorite Places:

Strengths:

Again, this site has a very appealing look about it, and views well for a general page.

The AJAX is very simple, but also does a good job doing what it needs to in order to get the correct results.

Weaknesses:

I think it would like a little better if the background would go across the entire width of the navigation page.

I think that, if possible, you should change the functionality of the title of the place and the link that says: keep track of this place. When I first clicked on the name, it opened up a new window, but I wanted to see where it was on the map...so I clicked on keep track of this place.

If you click on several "keep track of this place" links, several will pop up, but if you try to go back to a marker you already visited and click on it again, it disappears. Maybe this is a concern for iteration 2?

Overall, really nice job...heck, beats ours....no fair, My Favorite Places are doing better than me! :)

Review of Team Extreme

This is my review of Team Extreme:

Strengths:

The whole idea of this site is kinda neat. I always wondered how many NBA teams there were.

I like how you can either select the marker OR click the link and both of them do the same thing by bringing up the Yahoo News about that particular team.

Weaknesses:

When you select a team, sometimes the "map, satellite, hybrid" buttons are in the way of trying to close the window of that team's info.

Somehow, and maybe this is something with me...but after a few clicks in firefox, I got a whole page of gobblie gook such like: ℼ佄呃偙⁅瑨汭倠䉕䥌⁃ⴢ⼯㍗⽃䐯䑔堠呈䱍ㄠ〮匠牴捩⽴䔯≎∠瑨灴⼺眯睷眮⸳牯⽧剔砯瑨汭⼱呄⽄桸浴ㅬ猭牴捩⹴瑤≤ാ㰊瑨汭砠汭獮∽瑨灴⼺眯睷眮⸳牯⽧㤱㤹砯瑨汭㸢਍†格慥㹤਍††琼瑩敬䜾潯汧⁥慍獰眠瑩⁨䉎㱁琯瑩敬ാ

I couldn't find the AJAX because of the frames...what's the code look like?

Overall, nice job....Team Extreme.

Review of MCubed

This is my review of MCubed:

Strengths:

I love the idea of this site! If only every job search agent did this!

Like Team Extreme, I like that you can either click on the marker or the link and it pops up the bubble of information.

It has a good starting map size and location.

Weaknesses:

It's kinda plain...but I'm sure that will change over the next two iterations.

The source code is using innerHTML, which I know Professor Gibson talked about potential problems about this....so maybe finding something else? I don't know....

It would be cool if the links on the right could be dynamic, and list the title of the job, not just "job info 1"...but I don't know how this would work...

Overall, way cool...I so need this...can I use it when I get my Master's? :)

BTW, what's the significance of your team name, MCubed?
