Iteration 3. We try to setup our own discussion board in this iteration. We found out that in review that some users don't like to create account to post article or comment. They's why we try to build one for our own. The first forum we build use bbpress. It's a really nice fourm that allow me to build multiple fourms and each fourm will generate RSS feed. Also user can tag each post and search post by tag or subscribe RSS feed by tag. However it is petrry new and the system it's really stable and has some bugs that I can't fix, so we decided to use phpbb. It's a really stable forum and I really like it. It can build multiple forums,too. The administrator tool is really nice that administator can control everything. Also phpbb allow administrator to set that user don't need to register to post article. That's really what we are looking for. It also will auto adjust the fourm's size if I open the fourm in the iframe. However it didn't have tag article and generate RSS feed's features that bbpress has. So I search for RSS plug-in to make forum can generate RSS feed. I knew that our project have weaker user interative. That's why I add star widget and Google group. However, start widget is slowing down the loading speed and looks like people don't like Google Group also. The Google Goup request too many steps to post a article. I am not sure that what other user interative that we can do base on the skill and time we have now. First I try to fix the the grammer problem and make it readable. Let me start by informing all of you that did not make it to the Menlo Innovations trip...you missed out a good introduction to the real world, and more. I've been taking computer classes for years now learning how software development & design companies work. But getting a tour in the real world is quite different. The CEO and President, Richard Sheridan was all about common sense. No strict rules, open environment, no cubicles, no long hours, and staff with good attitudes. I had learned about "pair programming" but I didn't understand the concept until I saw two programmers sharing one keyboard, one computer. I think it is a good idea for a freshmen or sophmore to take such trips to determine if that's what the want to do for their careers. All in all, it was two hours of my time well spent.
I am Milot went to trip to Menlo, and it is realy interesting. When Richard told us about how people work in Menlo, it was really fascinating. He told us about how "pair progamming" work and why it is more efficient than ordinary work style. Richard told us how Menlo see and think things differently than others. I think that the key for Menlo to success. They care about their customer and list their voice. That's what good programmer or product designer should do, to give customers what they need. That's so many things that so interesting to me. Even that I have to go to school fashion show in the main campus at 7PM and I was trying to leave 20 min early but I can't resist it and leave Menlo amost at 7PM. TeamExtreme! project, we have the infowindow pop up on the fix size and the text won't go outside the inforwindow is we using the . Ifram can help you control the infowindow's size because when you set the size of ifram the infowindow will adjust it's size to fit ifram. Also ifram can give you the scrolling bar on the side so if you have too much info in the infowindow user can use scroll bar to see it and the content won't go outside of infowindow. If you don't wnt people to see the ifram's edge just simply set frameborder="0" and edge will become invisible. But I have to worry people that using too much ifrma might cause slowing down the webpage loading speed. 2. The php file that can convert the RSS feed I alread talk about in my previous blog. It very easy to use however don't covert the RSS feed that content picture, because it didn't work on picture. 3.I decodeing the webpage now, so everyone wnat to see the source code you can see it now. I have thinkg about what Jame said last time in our iteration 2 presentation. I remember he said that " Why people want to use your website instead to use Google or ESPN? " I think first of all, our website didn't provide any sports data and all the information we have on the website is provide by sports news website. However, we try to put everything together. For example, we put each team's news, league's action and calendar in one place. We also get information from different place. It's like "One Stop Shopping" that user can get lot information in one place. That's the goal when we start this project. Continue the thing I talk in above, the second thing we thought about it this week is how can we provide the information that we don't have right now. James question our project about how can he the player on our website if he didn't know which team the player play. Actually this is a good question. There is no RSS feed that content all the list of player in the league or in the team. Also AJAX is not just use ifram to link to other website. So we come out the solution that put the customize Google search Engine in the website that only search the sport news from some sports news website. in this way, people can search team, player or event on the search engine. I think that one of the big problem is the we bpage loading speed is slow. So this is what we are focus to do this week. The first thing I did is to move the webpage from people.emich.edu to kaespace.com. I think people.emich.edu is might not fast enough, also it's limilt me to try some API. By move the webpage, it cost me a day to correct some coding change. The second thing I done is to monitor the website. I try to load my website on different web browser and different environment. I found out that the old counter is bad that not just slow down the webpage loading time also slow down the star rating loading speed. But star rating loading speed is still slow, it depend on star rating widget server. Although our focus right now is to find out our target group and how to attact those people, but since MLB season is starting now. I am really interesting about the Yahoo Mail API. I look at it last night and this morning. It allow develper put Yahoo Mail API on their application and user can login on Yahoo and read and write e-mail on other website. It looks so interesting to me and I thought that if I can put Yahoo APi on my project, it will be nice that user can write the articles to the Google Group, because Google allow people to use e-amil system to write the articles. However, there is some problem with setup the Yahoo Mail Api. 1. when you use Yahoo Mail Api, you have to register. They reguest require that you need to put random txt file nuder the root directory. I use people.emich.edu service, but I don't have access to put txt file under people.emich.edu. I only can put file under people.emich.edu/mchiang4. So if I want to do it I need to get my own space. 2. The Yahoo Mail API has restrictions between free Yahoo Mail account and Yahoo Mail Plus account. The Yahoo Plus account can do anything they want just like regular e-mail system. However, their is a lot of restrictions for free Yahoo Mail account, like can't delect the mail, can't sort the mail, can't creat folder..... Maybe the only thing free account user can do is write the mail and read the e-mail. To switch the project from one to other will tak me a while to do it. The problem that many people talk about that the page show the (Unknow city? not found) alert window still here in the new version. I test it a little with my Kae account. The account work and the store location shows find, search sidebar works ok. The onlythinf didn't work is Google map. It wan't show anything on the map. Actually you guys doing the great job on the project. It just that the bug keep a lot people can't use. I think that MAYBE it cause by users' internet conection or I think MAYBE the firewall, Anti-virus or someother reason that it block the website to read the IP address. Myabe I should rephrase that it's almost everyone should at less have one e-mail account now. Right now, there are a lot of website or company provide free e-mail account, especially for Yahoo, Microsoft and Google. Microsoft and Google provide free 2GB and 2.8GB e-mail account awhile ago. Yahoo only has free 1GB e-mail account, also the VIP e-mail account which user have to pay only have 2GB. Before 10 years Yahoo Mail anniversary, Yahoo announce that they will provide UNLIMITED FREE e-mail account in May. I just try to use Gmail for a month ago. However I already know Gmail for awhile. The reason I didn't have Gmail earlier is because I already 3 e-mail account. Each e-mail account has its purpose and I don't know that if I get the new e-mail account what should I do. I thought that to check 5 e-mail account constantly everyday will take we a lot of time. However when I know that Gmail can receive your e-mail from other account it makes me want to try, and It also have 2.8GB. I saw Yahoo recently test their new e-mail system, so do Hotmail.
