Spam explosion

Throughout the term, we've had a couple of SPAM explosions. Call this the bane of Web 2.0. One issue raised by Juweria and Dean is how to stop the emails coming to you every time you get a comment. This seems to be the major irritant.

To stop emails, just go into your blog's detailed settings under feedback. About halfway down the page you'll find settings to control when you get an email for both comments and trackbacks.

blog system now fixed, you can track back again

We've been experiencing a blogging misconfiguration error when posting. The problem was fairly simple. Our rebuild system rebuilds the main page and a giant index of all posts. Now approaching 1300 posts for the semester, the system was timing out on the rebuild of the giant index and giving the misconfiguration error. Nothing was misconfigured. It was just taking too long.

The error received while tracking back was the first sign of this problem. Trackbacks come near the end of the rebuild process. Even with track backs off, the problem slowly progressed in scope as the total number of entries grew. At some stage after midnight last night, it became impossible to post.

Attempting a few test posts on different blogs convinced me it was not just an issue with one blog. I then noticed how long the posting was taking and considered the rebuild process. That's when the solution struck me.

update: Rosie has, quite rightly, asked what the fix was. Well, at this point, I am no longer rebuilding the complete archives list with every post. That shortens up the time to build enough that the process does not time out.

Chidamabaram, I guess most of us are getting the same error. You are right it actually publishes but it would be better if we would save it is a draft. Dr.Gibson said he is working on it.

The issue seems to be trackback autodiscovery. If you turn it off, you will be able to publish normally. Here's how to do it.

Log in to your account

Choose settings

Under "New Entry Defaults", disable trackback autodiscovery

Save your changes

This problem seems to be affecting only some people. There was a misconfiguration in one of the blogs. If you tried to use trackback autodiscovery during this period (by simply writing a post with a link in it), you are likely experiencing this issue.

Intermittent publishing bug

Some of you have been receiving an "Internal Server Error" message when you try to publish. As a result, you attempt to republish several times. As it turns out, the error message seems not to indicate a real problem. The original post actually publishes.

However, to be safe, I recommend clicking back and saving the post as a draft.

The issue began showing up about the time Jeff's blog had a legitimate problem that was causing his site not to work. This other problem may be due to server load.

Upcoming Iteration 2

By the iteration due date, all student groups should write a blog post linking to their slides and their mashup. The posts should be tagged with Iteration2Site and the group name, for example: Iteration2Site, TeamExtreme.

Reviews should be done over the following week. Again, you should list strengths and weaknesses. Tag your posts with Iteration2Review and the name of the group you are reviewing. For instance, if you are reviewing MapYourBuddies, your review should be tagged: Iteration2Review, MapYourBuddies.

Map Your Buddies Catching a Trend?

Slashdot | Social Networking Sites Opening Their APIs

"Business Week magazine is looking at social networking sites opening their APIs to third-party developers to enable social applications not supported by the network itself. Facebook is setting an example by releasing their API from beta into 1.0, and many others are expected to follow the suit. Quoting from the article: 'Since Facebook, a network of 17 million college students, started a pilot program last summer, third-party developers have created some 100 new applications. Now a Facebook user name and password can be used to log in to content-sharing and chat site Mosoto, and to automatically import Facebook friends into Mosoto's buddy list for chat. Facebook itself does not offer a chat function.'"

To be honest, I thought the facebook thing was a joke at first. Who'd use it? But apparently, social networking sites are all opening up for mashups (with the exception of myspace). It sounds like the main motivation is to hang on to users. Remember data is the new Intel Inside.
